1. Jika warna air kekuningan, maka kemungkinan air tercemar chromium dan materi organik. Jika air berwarna merah kekuningan, itu menunjukkan adanya cemaran besi. Jika polutan atau pengotor berupa lumpur akan memberi warna merah kecoklatan.
2. Fisik air keruh merupakan tanda bahwa air tanah telah tercemar oleh koloid. Lumpur, tanah liat dan berbagai mikroorganisme seperti plankton maupun partikel lainnya bisa menyebabkan air berubah menjadi keruh.
3. Polutan berupa mineral tertentu dapat menyebabkan air tanah memiliki rasa tertentu. Jika terasa pahit, pemicunya bisa berupa besi, alumunium, mangaan, sulfat maupun kapur dalam jumlah besar.
